Developer Notes #1: Oct.6.2026

Starting with this post, I’ll be sharing regular development updates so everyone who has been following The Dragon Slayer can stay up to date with what we’re working on and how the new edition is taking shape.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been redesigning the mini games, reworking the core storylines for each character, and continuing to refine the game’s visual direction and poster art.
So far, development is moving according to plan, and we’re aiming to complete the first full draft by the end of December.
Mini Game Redesign
The Dragon Slayer includes two mini games, placed after the reading sections of Chapter I and II. Their main purpose is to break the ice, give players a change of pace after reading, and keep the energy of the session moving.
We decided to keep Mini Game 1, although we’ve made several changes to the rules. The core idea is somewhat similar to Halli Galli, with players reacting quickly to what appears on the table. We’re also designing it so it can work as a standalone mini game that you can bring out and play with friends outside of The Dragon Slayer.
For Mini Game 2, we decided to start over completely.
The first edition relied too heavily on the GM to keep the game running, and after revisiting it, we also felt that the mechanic simply wasn’t fun enough or closely connected enough to the story.
The new version is a lighthearted verbal bluffing game that challenges players to think quickly, tell convincing stories, and sometimes make things up on the spot. One player will have to listen carefully, look for holes in everyone else’s stories, and figure out which person is the only one telling the truth.
Unlike Mini Game 1, this game is designed specifically around the story and isn’t meant to be replayed as a standalone game.
Reworking the Character Stories
One of the biggest pieces of feedback from the first edition was that there wasn’t enough interaction between characters, and that some character motivations felt too simple.
We agreed.
For the second edition, we’ve made significant changes to the core story. Because of that, every character now has a new storyline, stronger motivations, and more meaningful connections to the other players.
With the overall structure now taking shape, our next step is to start writing the full character content.
What We Want The Dragon Slayer to Be
Our goal with The Dragon Slayer 2nd Edition is to create a Jubensha that works especially well as a first experience.
We want new players to be able to sit down, understand how to play, enjoy a complete story in around 3 hours, and come away wanting to explore more of what Jubensha has to offer.
That has been one of the biggest things guiding our decisions throughout this redesign.
We’re currently aiming to launch The Dragon Slayer 2nd Edition on Kickstarter in March 2027.
You can join our VIP list for just $1 to unlock our best launch price, including approximately 23% off the planned MSRP, and be among the earliest supporters of the new edition.
More updates soon.
